Gilbert Garcin in a few words

Born in La Ciotat in 1929, the photograph Gilbert Garcin is a rare example ofartist who invented his works at 60 past.

Gilbert Garcin, after an entrepreneurial career in the sale of lighting, began learning photography. He then wins the first prize in a competition amateur. This is how he participated in 1992 in the Arles meetings under the direction of Pascal Dolémieux. From that moment on, he was launched into an adventure that would occupy him for 30 years.

The art of photomontage

Photographer Gilbert Garcin makes his photomontages in his shed at home Ciotat which he transformed into a workshop. Like a director, he creates his works with rudimentary technique. He manipulates the ladders using his cut-out figure. And using simple means; sand from La Ciotat, pebbles, pieces of string, pieces of wood etc… from a projector and cinema screen he sets up scenes and sets on his workbench which he then photographs.
It is then that, like a “photographic trompe l’oeil” he takes us on works of photomontages that are surreal and poetic at the same time.

Poetic & philosophical works

The exhibition at Villa Théo is designed with a chronological progression in its creations.
You will find a lot of humor and a little cynicism in his works.
The 30 works exhibited were selected in order to reach a large audience. Everyone can thus appropriate the photographs.

Discover throughout the exhibition philosophical titles, inviting reflection, all imbued with poetry and lightness. His photographs speak of universal themes such; love, time, glory, solitude, freedom… These works lead you to let your emotions emerge while looking at them.
