Since 1997, Le Lavandou has continuously received the prestigious Blue Flag. This quality label is awarded to beaches. It is based on four categories of criteria:
- Water Management : Encompassing the monitoring of bathing water and the treatment of wastewater.
- Overall environmental quality : Including town planning, equipment, waste management and landscaping.
- Environmental education initiatives : Including communication campaigns and public information.
- Management of waste and implementation of selective collection.
Although often associated with recognition of pristine beaches, the Blue Flag actually rewards the comprehensive environmental management of a municipality. In fact, this label evaluates a wide range of criteria which go beyond just the quality of bathing water. Local environmental policy is thus scrupulously evaluated, as are environmental education initiatives.
