Prevent risks

To prevent any risk to the health of swimmers, it is important to know the quality of bathing water in sea water or fresh water. Regular monitoring of the quality of bathing water makes it possible to know the impacts of various possible discharges located upstream of the site. But also to assess possible malfunctions linked to wastewater sanitation, rainwater discharge, etc., which would influence the quality of the water at the bathing site.

The knowledge thus acquired can provide decision support to local authorities in order to improve control of the causes of pollution generated in particular by poor management of domestic wastewater.

The health control of bathing water is implemented by the Regional Health Agencies and remains a constant concern of the Ministry of Health which draws up regulations in this area on the basis of European directives.

Determine swimming sites

Health control covers all areas accessible to the public where swimming is usually practiced by a large number of bathers and which have not been the subject of a ban order. Bathing waters, whether developed or not, are recorded annually by the municipalities. The census is carried out before the start of each bathing season and plans to take into consideration the public opinion expressed during the previous season. To this end, registers are made available to the public at the town hall, at the Tourist office and at first aid stations.
